The Menzies Global and Tropical Health (GTH) Division is committed to dealing with key areas of public health concern that impact on the health and wellbeing of people and communities across northern Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. With a focus on translational research we shape our research program through close collaboration with a diverse range of healthcare providers, policy makers and researchers, to target priority health issues. Our aim is to find meaningful and relevant ways to improve the health of people in our region.

Menzies has an office in Dili, Timor-Leste with around 40 Timorese and expatriate staff employed in-country, supporting the delivery of capacity-building and research projects. Three main projects, STRONG TL (Surveillance, Training, Research Opportunities and National Guidelines for improving communicable disease control in Timor-Leste), the Fleming Fund Country Grant for Timor-Leste and ARIA-RISE, a vaccine preventable disease serosurveillance study, are being conducted through the office under a Memorandum of Understanding between Menzies and the Ministry of Health, along with other smaller projects and partnerships.

The focus of the Fleming Fund Country Grant for Timor-Leste is strengthening the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antimicrobial use (AMU) surveillance systems and antimicrobial consumption (AMC) data capture in both the human and animal health sectors. The project will facilitate a stronger ‘One Health’ approach to surveillance, bringing together multi-sectoral stakeholders to share surveillance data and gain a better understanding of AMR, AMU and AMC.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Qualitative Researcher will have responsibility for leadership of qualitative research projects in Timor-Leste, with a focus on projects related to the Fleming Fund Country Grant work on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antimicrobial use surveillance. In the process of leading and undertaking qualitative research, the qualitative researcher will also deliver training and mentoring for other members of the Menzies Timor-Leste team, who are involved in qualitative research projects.

SELECTION CRITERIA:
  1. Tertiary qualification in a field relevant to the role e.g. science, nursing or medicine
  2. A research higher degree, and proven contribution to qualitative research projects
  3. Demonstrated skill in interviewing, conducting focus groups, transcription of spoken communication, and writing qualitative research reports
  4. Highly developed written and verbal communication skills in English and Tetun, with experience in writing high level reports
  5. Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact effectively with people from diverse cultures and educational backgrounds
  6. Demonstrated capacity to work independently without direct supervision, under broad direction and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  7. Experience of maintaining good organisational and time management skills and proven ability to meet deadlines
  8. Experience conducting qualitative research in Timor-Leste
  9. Understanding of and commitment to Menzies values, the principles of Equal Opportunity and contributing to a safe and inclusive workplace
  10. The ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
Desirable:
1. Portuguese and or Bahasa language skills an advantage
