Introduction

As a federal enterprise, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its objectives in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development.

The Ai Ba Futuru-project between Timor-Leste, the European Union (EU) and Germany (represented by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, BMZ) was established to “contribute to a peaceful, inclusive and sustainable development in Timor-Leste through improved rural access, the creation of employment, economic and domestic revenue opportunities, and a durable reduction in food insecurity and malnutrition in rural areas”. Ai ba Futuru is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in co-operation with the Ministry for Agriculture and Fisheries of Timor-Leste (MAF).

The project supports the development of agroforestry systems and related technical skills, improves land and natural resource management, and creates market linkages. More than four thousand households in 40 sucos will benefit from those activities and from improved agroforestry-related value chains. The project is being implemented in the municipalities of Manatuto, Lautem, Viqueque, and Baucau (the project area).

At the same time, another EU-funded project “Rai Matak” is currently being implemented to scale up carbon farming activities across Timor-Leste
