MACP Filed Project Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY - This position is based in Lautem, Timor-Leste
Conservation International Timor-Leste (CITL) together with Konservasi Indonesia is implementing MACP Project: Empowering Stakeholder Collaboration to Scale Marine Conservation for Blue Economy in Bird Head Seascapes (BHS) and the Transboundary Nature Peace Park (TNP) of Lesser Sunda Seascapes. The project goal is focusing on two main objectives. Firstly, it focuses on tackling the immediate threats faced by manta rays and whale sharks by establishing secure habitats within MPAs. Secondly, it aims to empower coastal communities to become stewards of their natural resources. Through strategic collaboration with local leaders and government bodies, CI-TL seeks to foster a sense of ownership and responsibility, transforming local communities into active participants in the conservation journey. This project aims not only to identify mantas and whale sharks spots but to change how communities perceive and engage with their natural surroundings. Through focusing on community-based eco-tourism, it seeks to unlock the economic potential of the marine while also keeping it safe and healthy.
The Field Assistant will support the implementation of conservation activities at the community level within Timor-Leste and provide support to the Indonesia team as needed. This role involves working closely with local communities to promote sustainable livelihoods, support MPA Management and collect field data. The Field Assistant will report to the Project Coordinator and play a key role in ensuring the success of project activities on the ground.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in the implementation of project activities, including MPA establishment and management.
- Conduct regular field visits to engage with local communities and stakeholders.
- Participate in field activities within the project area and coordinate with community group members and program staff to help integrate community group members into the program activities.
- Provide logistical and operational support for meetings, training sessions, and workshops.
- Be a contact person and a mediator between local government staff, community members, and CI.
- Facilitate all meetings, training sessions, and workshops.
- Facilitate and take part in field data collection activities associated with the project.
- Successfully submit on-time weekly and monthly reports and cash requests/acquittals to supervisor, when required.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Typical office environment. Ability to work extended hours or travel as needed.
- This position is based in Com, Lautem, and with frequent travel to Dili and other project sites as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- High School degree
- Up to 2 years of related work experience, preferably in the conservation, NGO or advocacy arena.
- Ability to function well in a multicultural, diverse, and fast-paced work team environment.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Comfortable managing multiple duties and adapting to changing priorities.
- Service focus. Courteous, tactful, and proven ability to work effectively with others.
- Ability to work under general supervision and take initiative to solve problems under supervisor direction.
- Proficiency with MS Office, web research, and related skills.
- Fluency in English and Tetum.
- Experience working with communities, especially those communities living within MPA areas.
- Previous experience in field project.
- Local language ability.
- Motorbike License
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries, Conservation, or other relevant field.
- Experience working with communities, especially those communities living within protected areas.
