Our growing NGO is seeking to hire an Urban Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Program Officer who will be responsible for being Mercy Corps’ front-line representative in the community for the KOICA-funded PREPARADU program. The DRR Program Officer’s main role is to implement program activities that contribute to building resilience capacities through a disaster risk reduction approach in Dili. The DRR Program Officer will ensure that all program activities are conducted according to the work plan to achieve the overall goal and objectives of the program.
Based in Dili, a bachelor’s degree in a related field is required. To succeed in this role, you will need excellent communication and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work with stakeholders to get important work done. Previous experience in a disaster risk reduction role is a plus.
Urban Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Program Officer Responsibilities:
- Implementing DRR activities in the community in PREPARADU programming areas: This includes:
- Mobilizing the community to participate in program activities
- Building relationships with SDMC members, DDMCs, Chefe Sucos, and Chefe Aldeias
- Facilitate training to community members and SDMCs
- Facilitating contingency planning workshops and simulation exercises with SDMCs and schools
- Conducting drills and skill-building trainings for local responders
- Operationalize and test early warning systems
- Develop materials and provide support for awareness campaigns for disaster risks and effective responses.
Urban Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Program Officer Requirements:
- Degree in engineering, agriculture, climate change, development, or another related degree.
- Minimum three years’ experience with community-based disaster risk reduction programs.
- Experience working with community groups and government officials.
- Fluency in Tetum, with some proficiency in English preferred
- Willingness to travel around the Dili area.
- Ability to set and meet deadlines, diagnose, and solve problems independently and as a team.
- Proficiency with MS Office software required (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Demonstrated commitment to the promotion of a gender-empowered, non-discriminatory work environment
