Short-term Exhibition Assistants and Administration

Background

Timor Aid has been awarded a highly competitive grant by the Ambassadors Fund for Culture Preservation (AFCP) – under the guidance of the Embassy of the United States of America in Timor-Leste. The grant will support Timor Aid’s work in the Preservation of Intangible Culture Heritage - Tais. Timor Aid is a Member of the Timor-Leste National Committee for Intangible Culture Heritage (ICH); the AFCP grant will help Timor Aid to fulfil our responsibilities as part of the ICH.

Over the last 22 years, Timor Aid has developed a dedicated and consistent work in the area of preserving the intangible cultural heritage of Timor-Leste, the Tais, internationally recognized by UNESCO, on December 14, 2021, as “Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding”. As a result of this work, Timor Aid has put together a Collection of Tais that will be organized on display, with the aim of honouring the Timorese weavers who, over the centuries, have produced and transmitted this unique cultural wealth of the country, symbol of the Timorese identity.

Socialization activities on Tais as an intangible cultural heritage during the Exhibition, include school outreaches, and thematic discussions involving the National Committee for Intangible Cultural Heritage, relevant government institutions, non-governmental organizations, and experts on traditional textile and cultural heritage preservation, to increase public awareness on the significance of Tais and issues surrounding its preservation as an intangible cultural heritage.

Purpose of the position 

The person to fill the position of Exhibition Assistant and administration, is required to work full time in the exhibition gallery as guide, keep er of the displayed objects, especially when there are visitors with children and school visits. The Exhibition Assistant will maintain the exhibition space clean and support the project staff while guiding the visitors or students.

Time frame : Mid July – Mid November 2022

 

Scope and approach

The Exhibition Assistant is expected to perform the following tasks:

  • The Tais Exhibition Assistant and administration, will help the Timor Aid Culture Team responsible for the installation of the Exhibition of Timor Aid Tais Collection, and also the uninstall process. 
  • Responsible for the general cleanliness and presentation of the exhibition space. 
  • Responsible for the keeping the exhibition, guiding the visitors or students, prepare Participants List, and collect information from the visitors or students.

  • Responsible to support the Timor Aid Culture Team with the preparation of the venue for thematic sessions, and related activities. 
  • The Exhibition Assistant will wear tais during working hours for the whole period of the assignment.

  • Able, confident, and good mannered communicator in Tetun and English, as well as in writing skills.
  • Self-motivated, with a methodical, confident and organized approach.
  • An excellent team player, with the ability to inspire and influence others.
  • Pay attention to detail to deliver consistent quality output.
  • Excellent planning skills with the ability to prioritize, and manage multiple tasks whilst ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office or similar, and the ability to learn new software packages quickly.

 

Qualification

  • High School Graduate, or minimum 2 years of experience in working with art displays / exhibitions
